LONDON, Ont. Jason Pierre-Paul Jersey . - If Joannie Rochette wanted to send a message to the world a month before the Olympics, she did Saturday at the Canadian figure skating championships. "Im ready. Im back," she said after completely overwhelming all of her opponents and winning with a score of 208.23, only a couple of points behind the world record set by Kim Yu-Na of South Korea earlier this year. Rochette, of Ile-Dupas, Que., won by more than 25 points over former Canadian champion Cynthia Phaneuf of Contrecoeur, Que., and both earned the Olympic berths going to Vancouver. In winning her sixth Canadian title, Rochette shed a few tears, and doesnt really quite know why. Perhaps it was part relief, part triumph. "It seems like every year Im more nervous about it," she said. "Even though I was qualified for the Games, it was more important for me to come here and do two strong performances." After finishing second in the short program to Phaneuf the previous day, Rochette came out onto the ice, fiercely competitive, unstoppable, unblinking. She was like a force of nature, so inspiring that the crowd stood to its feet more than 10 seconds before shed finished the routine. Rochette said she was almost "robotic." "That was kind of in the plan," Rochette said. "After the season Ive had, I just wanted to do one element at a time, take it one step at a time. It was really important for my own confidence to do this. Of course, the program can be so much more." Winning her sixth Canadian title was important to Rochette, and she said it didnt matter if she qualified or not. "I didnt want to go into these Olympics not being champion in my own country. Its always better for confidence. But after doing a program like this, its really helping my confidence." Rochette won the long program with an astonishing 144.08 points, 27.83 points ahead of Phaneuf at 116.24. Rochettes previous high mark for a rocky season was 112.90 for a free skate this year. Rochette rarely missed a beat, perhaps losing a level of difficulty here or there. Phaneuf doubled a triple Lutz, and a triple Salchow, and was well on her way to a standing ovation, when she fumbled and went to her knees on her final pose. Afterward, the crowd sang happy birthday to her. "It was my goal to give myself the best gift I could give in my skating career. and I did, so Im very happy." If Phaneuf has found a second wind in her career, so has Rochette. "Its the second part of my season and Im starting with a new wind. That feels really good. It feels like starting back. I almost feel like its a neew season. After the holidays, I just took some time for myself to regroup and I feel Im just starting a brand new season and I can feel clear about it in my head." Myriane Samson of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., won the bronze medal and will be an Olympic alternate. Diane Szmiett of Watford, Ont., actually finished third in the long program and fourth overall. The performances of the top two top women elicited goosebumps from Canadian Olympic Committee vice president Gord Peterson, who announced the womens and pairs Olympic team Saturday. Jessica Dube of Drummondville, Que., and Bryce Davison of Huntsville, Ont., as well as Canadian silver medalists Anabelle Langlois of Grand-Mere, Que., and Cody Hay of Dawson Creek, B.C. form the Olympic pair team. Petersen said the Olympic team will number between 210-220 athletes that will compete in all 13 events. He added that Skate Canada has a rich history of producing Winter Olympic medalists, including gold in womens singles (Barbara Ann Scott in 1948) and in pairs (Barbara Wagner and Bob Paul in 1960 and Jamie Sale and David Pelletier in 2002. "Thats an amazing history," he said. "Canada has thrived on the success of its figure skaters and I look forward to the continuation in Vancouver." Jerod Mayo Jersey .
